About the CadLab

The Communication Analysis and Design Laboratory is an interdisciplinary research group that combines work on speech communication and human-computer interaction. Located in the Forsyth Building, our lab is a part of the Bouvé College of Health Sciences and the College of Computer and Information Sciences.

Our projects span both basic science and applied research. A central focus of our work is the study of prosody - the melody of spoken communication. We study how prosody is produced and understood in typically developing children, healthy adults and individuals with neurological speech disorders. Our team applies these basic research findings toward the design of novel human-computer interfaces for assistive technology, language learning, and intervention tools.

Our research has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institute of Child and Human Development (NICHD), the National Institute of Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR), the Charles H. Hood Foundation, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation, and the Tufts CTSI Pilot grant program.
