Study 1: Understanding the Social Interaction and Participation Experiences of Adolescents/Young Adults with Speech Impairment (Recruitment is Closed)

Adolescents (ages 13-17 years) and young adults (ages 18-23 years) with speech disorder and a parent/caregiver are needed to participate in a Northeastern University research study about social interaction experiences.

-Each participant will receive $50 upon completion of the study
-This study will take place at a convenient location (your home or our laboratory at Northeastern University). Free Parking.
 

Who is eligible to participate?

Adolescents/young adults who:
- Are 13-23 years old
- Have a communication impairment due to a motor disorder (e.g., cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, brain injury, etc.)
- Speak English as their primary language

What will you and your child do?

Fill out questionnaires and participate in an interview about your child's social experiences

How long will it take?

Two 1-1.5 hour sessions for each participant.

Why is this research important?

Our goal is to understand the social interaction experiences of adolescents and young adults with speech disorders. We hope this information will improve the design and implementation of speech assessments and interventions that support positive social experiences. 

This study has been approved by Northeastern University Institutional Review Board (#17-05-27).


Study 2: Usability of Social Participation and Navigation (SPAN), a Social Participation Intervention, with Adolescents/Young Adults with Speech Impairment (Recruitment is Closed)

Adolescents (ages 13-17 years) and young adults (ages 18-23 years) with speech disorder and a parent/caregiver are needed to participate in a Northeastern University research study to test the usability of an intervention to promote positive interactions. 

- Each participant will receive $60 upon completion of the study
- This study will take place at a convenient location (your home or our laboratory at Northeastern University). Free Parking. 

Who is eligible to participate?

Adolescents/young adults who:
-Are 13-23 years old
-Have a previously diagnosed communication impairment due to a motor disorder (e.g., cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, brain injury, etc.)
- Speak English as their primary language

What will you and your child do?

Use the web-based Social Participation and Navigation (SPAN) intervention and provide feedback through an interview and questionnaire. 

Where will this study take place?

Interviews will take place at your home, our laboratory at Northeastern University, or another convenient location. The online SPAN intervention will be accessed at home via the web. 

How long will it take?

Two 1-1.5 hour sessions for each participant + engaging with SPAN across a 2-week period.

Why is this research important?

Our goal is to adapt a social participation intervention to children and young adults with motor speech disorders. We hope this study will lead to the improved design and implementation of interventions that support positive social experiences.
